According to Blind, your education is pointless if you can’t leetcode.

The most important thing to me is career advancement so I can comfortably focus on an idea of my own. Judging by the west coast COL, I would need about $500k/year to keep up at my current pace if I moved west. Is that feasible?

Yes but only if you are good and interview well. COL is ~70% more on the west coast right?

Don’t necessarily need 500k to make the move worth it. There are so many other factors to consider.

Weather: SF Bay Area is fairly temperate all year round. It rains in the winter and is sunny or partly cloudy most days. Seattle is also temperate and is great if you like rain.

Culture: SF and Seattle are pretty diverse and has tons of foods from around the world. If you have niche hobbies there’s probably a group for that. There’s also so much tech around that you’ll overhear conversations on the bus or cafe about their new startup or core technology. This could be a pro or a con.

Savings: if you save 20% of your TC in both places, wouldn’t you rather save with the bigger paycheck? You could always save up and move to low CoL when you get bored.

Job opportunities: all the top companies have HQ or satellite offices here. Job mobility is great. Competition for hires is great.

@Evenflow, thanks for the input and not really sure if it's 70%. 1%er income in Chicago is $587k. The Bay is probably similar to San Jose at $1.15 million. So I'm guessing 2x is the starting point. gle.com/amp/s/kkkk://www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/07/23/how-much-you-have-to-earn-to-be-a-top-earner-the-biggest-us-cities.html

@Lyft, thanks for the deep detail. Weather is not a problem, fortunately. I do care about culture a lot though. Chicago is pretty segregated by that regard. Savings is a tricky one I think. I only plan on living in power cities like NYC, SF, Chi so given the fact I live in the weakest of the three, it's hard to compare.

@Snapchat, is that $350k guaranteed or part of stock opts and other offerings?

Finished mastery portion, continued a little further and dropped out. Too much opportunity in industry.

Ah. Makes sense. I’m looking at phds myself now and can’t drag myself out of the industry. :/

Complete master while working. Take your time. If you're in a math heavy field, sky's the limit. In swe, may not be worth it.

It is but certainly not best. From what I hear, Citadel pays 7 figures for exact skill set, experience and research.

Yea the only thing I would caution you on is math. If you don't like math (probability theory, tensor calculus etc), do not become a quant. It's as much math as it is programming.
