Amazon - BIE or Data Engineer ?

Hi Folks ..I am a BIE (L5) in Amazon. For furure growth, should I stay as BIE or switch to Data Engineer for which I was initially hired ? Which one is better from furure growth perspective ? I dont know if there are L7 n above for BIE’s ?

That is a pretty open ended question. What are your future goals? If you see yourself staying at Amazon till after 7, its going be a few years to be honest given you're at 5 now. BIE is an arguably more open ended role in that you get to solve a larger variety of problems whereas data engineering less so given that you've a narrower focus on creating data solutions like data pipelines (more so than BIEs). There are definitely L7 BIEs, just not that many. I think the best way to get into a leadership role in the future would be to get into product, and I say this because I've seen a lot of people make that transition comfortably.

Thanks for the response Tolkien. Transitioning to Product makes sense. However I am more inclined towards a Technical Program Manager role. Do I have to move to a DE role and then to TPM or should I directly apply for TPM L5 roles in other teams as my current team does not have any such open opportunities. Does this makes sense ? :)

BIE would be a better base for TPM. More end to end metrics, analysis , data prep and visualization
