Non American here. Wondering if an engagement diamond ring costing 3 months worth of salary is still a thing. How much have/will you pay for such a ring? Fun fact: the avg. price paid by American for an engagement ring is 6k. Says Google.
3 months of salary is for blue collar workers. My wife didn’t get a 40k ring.
Waste of money
My wife asked for a ruby instead of a diamond because she liked the color and they are far cheaper. Ended up spending about 600 for a unique gold leaf designed ring + heart cut ruby of decent size compared to the tiny diamond we could have gotten for the same amount. We like the symbolism of rings but appreciate creative expression which gave us a lot of freedom while still being 'traditional' by getting rings.
It honestly depends on your girl's background and where you're living. Some girl's may be more or less inclined to demand extravagant diamonds depending on what kind of family they're coming from. Also, in the event they've relocated from their hometown, there will be social influences to desire a ring that would be considered respectable in your zip code. Whether or not a ring costs X months salary is less important than ensuring you do your homework on her expectations and the neighborhood norms.
I don’t think it matters, but ask your boo about It. I’ve seen women care more about the style and shape than the actual size or price. Another thing to consider is if you’re able to get an ethically sourced diamond. The engagement ring I got is under 2k, pretty small diamond, but it’s in a style I like, it’s not over-extravagant, and it reminds me of when we were just starting out after college. If I had a massive ring I wouldn’t wear it lmao
Without diamonds, will she really love you? Can you really put a price on that?
No girl can love without diamonds. It's unfair to even expect
We spent 25 bucks... Yep! And we decided to use the ring money on other gifts and travel
Gifts for whom M
Stop letting the De Beers company influence you. Buy whatever jewelry you and your partner want to commemorate the union; or don't buy anything at all.
I intentionally made my question unopinionated, but I totally agree with you. If I ever have to buy a diamond (certainly not for engagement, I'm long time married), it'd be a synthetic one. That's an industry worth supporting.
Don't date chinese girls if you want to save on engagement ring.
Wow. Came here to make this same post. Expect to spend 30-40k. Expect her mom to inspect the goods, get it evaluated by GIA, etc. After all that she’ll still ask if that’s it. Probably could get a better offer from that guy you want to school with. Why don’t you use this offer as leverage to get a better ring somewhere else.
Exactly!
You know what they say - 3 years salary.
U serious??
