I'm currently working at a company that out sources quite a bit work and it's killing our product. They're 1/3 the price but we have our in-house devs reviewing every line of code, rewriting some, or generally unfucking their Commits. We're constantly trying to hire H1B, pushing to open offices in India, and continually giving our 3rd party vendor more work. It's resulted in shitty code, terrible communication, early AM or late PM scrum calls and spending a lot of time over documenting (idiot proofing) our work so that they don't fuck it up, and even still, they manage to fuck something up. We're saving 2/3 on hiring quality in-house but spending a vast majority of the savings patching leaks, plugging holes, and duct taping shody work. On paper it's "savings" but the down stream effects are making up the cost differences. That being said, our in-house team is lacking, and struggling to produce quality work because the foundation upon which they're building our product is complete shit. --- Out of all the companies I've worked for its tied with the worst company I've ever worked with, and our CSuite either has no clue or can't see past the "get it done" rose tinted glasses. Any thoughts, besides finding a different job? I'm actually struggling to find anything even remotely close to my current pay or full-time (non-contract).
don’t big tech companies offer enough salaries for your experience?
Quit, and make the reason clear to your CoC.
Can't believe there are opportunities out there that are not only better but pay handsomely. Either you are getting paid way more than you deserve or you aren't looking at or qualifying for the opportunities. Remember you are competing with people with similar tenure and levels.
Fair enough. I'm actually at the top end of the median salary for my role for the city I'm working in. I've had several interviews and opportunities pop up since I started, and they seem to be either contract roles with a cap of $65/hr 6-12months, or full-time positions at/around my pay but openly list "working knowledge to expert level of JS, React, Angular, HTML5, CSS3, APIs, etc" as a requirement for "senior level design" which basically amounts to a call for unicorns, which I am not.
Taking a 20k cut would put me just under where I was when I started two roles prior (3-3.5y ago), which would put me in line or close to market average, or just over $65/hr
It's like you're describing my company exactly.
> That being said, our in-house team is lacking, and struggling to produce quality work because the foundation upon which they're building our product is complete shit. Your in house team in struggling to produce quality work. Your outsourcing partners are also not producing quality work. Sounds like you have a crappy codebase. Please consider suggesting improvements to this.
This could be describing my job almost exactly. For what it’s worth, my solution is to find a new job, even if that involves a (small) pay cut. Life’s way too short to deal with all the crap that comes from managing products developed this way. All that added stress does affect you, whether you realize it or not.
if you are in tech unless you really hate preparing for interviews you should be able to get a salary bump each time you jump. Pay cut happens in recession, which is...now?
Agreed. That was mostly in response to the OP’s concern about not being able to find anything in his range. Even assuming that is true, it still might be worthwhile for him.
Get the guy responsible for the outsourcing. Make him read this. https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/05/12/strategy-letter-i-ben-and-jerrys-vs-amazon/ If that doesn't work, I would suggest taking the pay cut temporarily and going somewhere else for a little while, but you keep on looking for other gigs. You'll have a job while being in between jobs. Or if you can afford to do so, take some time off.
