Travelling to your amazing country for a month and would like to avoid the tourist places and instead live like a local. Have some questions about Barcelona, Costa Brava, Pyreness and Madrid. Anyone up for a quick chat? (Have young kids. Prefer markets, food, walking around town, beaches and hikes over museums, theme parks and any place with lines. Mid August - Mid September.)
Maybe couchsurfing is a good idea. Look at airbnb experiences etc. Also Hostel stays!
I can’t help for the cities you’ve chosen, unless you want to visit northern Spain, too. So I can only give general advice. The month of August is a huge vacation month for Spain so beaches will be crowded. But things should chill out in the second half of your trip. Get a monthly pass for the train if you’d like to see the countryside and travel economically. Ryanair is also a good cheap option for a short trip or to get to the other side of the country.

What questions do you have? While I have not lived there myself, I have a family member who has lived there

Go to Valencia. There is a huge farmers market, beach, acquarium / SeaWorld attraction, east to get around via public transit.
Valencia would indeed be a great option for us. Unfortunately too hot mid August to mid September.
