Considering talking to Twitch org for SDM roles. Wondering if there are Twitch folks here who can shed light on the leadership and work life balance?
I am looking for a team with growing product looking that would provide opportunities for a Sr. Manager to grow. Your post tells me that it would be a good area to look into. Thanks.
It’s like Amazon, there’s too many pockets of good or bad to generalize. If you don’t use or like the product though please don’t bother. We have too many people already who have no idea what they’re doing with respect to twitch and it’s culture. If you do like/use the product then you can definitely find somewhere to be happy.
If you are good at Amazon it might be worth your while to move to twitch. They are becoming more Amazon and people will be needed to help steer them that direction.
Not sure about the definition of good :) but yeah 8 years here fed up with retail politics need to go build something new
Wow didn’t know twitch had management issues, I’m interested in working with them too. How’s their analytics team? Gaming company is a new topic for me but I like the positions. Following
Analytics and science is all embedded now so entirely depends on group you apply for. You’ll be reporting to PMs on product now instead science
No we still have a central DS/DA org. For embedded DS you don’t necessarily report to PM or TPM but will be interacting with them a lot for sure
There is not a strong analytics solution yet but I’ve heard they are building more around it. If you are attending GDC feel free to ask them as they have a presence there!
Twitch is in the midst of a re-org so I think it’s a “wait and see” time. Pre-reorg I wouldn’t advise anyone to apply (read Glassdoor reviews). In my 10 years of working in tech, I’ve never seen such amateur management mistakes. However, Emmett took responsibility for the toxicity and a number of execs have been brought in. Some are pretty seasoned. The product is still growing. I’m cautiously optimistic but if I start seeing the same patterns, definitely not worth the long wait in equity vesting for new hires. WLB is highly variable. Some teams you can get away with doing absolutely nothing. Others are sweatshops. I worked 14hr days for 6 months last year but it has since calmed down post re-org
An online gaming company has toxicity problems? Who would have guessed?
During your reorg please change your interview experience. Nothing worse than to be asked gotcha interview questions that rely on figuring out the trick in the first 5 minutes.
