For Average Joe it would be like finding out that Samsung provides OLED displays for Apple.

We did a simultaneous cyclical spin up. If one goes down, we all do down

Yea this is dumb. They use all three cloud providers. They started with AWS then started migrating some of their workloads to Azure in a bake off with GCP. They recently started using GCP for their workloads too. Apple even approached Azure to build a few data centers for them, but were turned down when Apple refused to foot the bill and only wanted to pay on a consumption basis.

Apple’s had huge issues with data centers in the past. There’s a great article in The Information talking about this.

Why did azure turn them down? Arent customers suppose to pay based on consumption.....Did Apple want datacenters all to themselves? What benefit would that provide?

If someone wants you to build a custom house with custom spec but only rent it month to month, will you spend the money to build it first?

^ this that’s essentially what happened. There are no guarantees they wouldn’t move more of their workloads to AWS or GCP. They were basically shopping for lowest price.

And Samsung makes their screens. At the scale Apple operates you’d be silly not to think there’s some cross pollination going on between all the major tech companies.

You have to get multi source for redundancy, and each vendor has multiple sources and geological regions for redundancy too

I guess I’m a little surprised about this. You’d expect Apple to not allow customer data to exist outside an Apple DC? It must be encrypted to the 9s.

iCloud is not for massive computation like aws. So what is the big deal that Apple uses google product?

    Agree with @laksksl.

A SaaS cloud service provider may use some other provider for IaaS or PaaS for that matter... Apple provides a service without necessarily owning the infrastructure service (could be counter intuitive but that’s a different discussion).
