Started a new job about 2 months ago, in a management level of a small company. The team is phenomenal and really good to work with, but the CEO is old school and bipolar. As a manager I report directly to her and there's no structure or processes in place, which I thought I could help with, but in these 2 months I realized she has no interest in what I have to offer to improve, she wants me to work the operations like everyone else. What would you do? š¤ Serious answers only please!
If sheās so bad, howād she get to CEO?
I know what you mean ā, but not all CEOs are nice right? I mean, Jeff put his people through the wringer too. Successful, sure, but not people driven. I say this because after IBM, I'm pretty beat up still about these things..
Luckily and sadly, I do not report to Jeff but Iāve had my share of crappy bosses. Iām just thinking your eagerness could be clouding a good opportunity if you give it time. Iām not in your shoes, but I tend to hit the ground running too fast too and have since learned itās far more beneficial to hang back and observe. The team potential sounds amazing, so why not dig into how and why they are so high performing? Whatās working so well? Turn your focus there first?
Maybe at 2 months in, you need to settle in and get the lay of the land. I get you want to make an impact but be patient and assume you can still learn from others whoāve achieved a lot. Sheās got an amazing team and sheās the top dog, so sheās doing something right.
I worked for that CEO a few years ago. I lasted for 6 months, which was 6 months too long.
Yeah!
Search out an executive coach. When the next crisis crashes in -- someone important quits the company, a deal falls through or she does something that risks a lawsuit -- ask if she has an executive coach and recommend the one you've found.
Great idea!
Listen to CEO, if you dont like how she runs, start your own
Alpaca bags and leave instead. Why listen to her when she doesn't listen to her employees?
OP, she listened to you, she just didnāt agree with what you had to say. Itās not her job to do what her employees say, itās her job to make sure the company doesnāt run out of money and becomes and stays profitable. If you donāt have trust in her ability to do this then you should leave. Also, youāre sounding very fragile. Donāt give up because your idea got rejected once. Have some resilience if you truly believe in yourself. Itās been 2 months ffs.
