Obviously the valley has its perks with all the great jobs but it’s so expensive. Seattle, Denver, and Atlanta seem to be great too. What are some other great cities for tech and which in your opinion is the best?
Minneapolis has a pretty interesting DevOps scene with Target and SPS Commerce (and Amazon). Cost of living is low and quality of life is high
Except it is -5 atm
Just wait till summer when it gets to +90 with 90% humidity.
Seattle is a shithole. How people survive there is a mystery to me.
Austin is great, but traffic problems starting to come up now because of the huge influx of new people.
And also it’s totally isolated from other places. Gets boring after a while.
Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill Area, Austin and Atlanta are all great
Manhattan (Google, Amazon, Facebook are all here). Contrary to popular belief, it’s much cheaper than SV. I live 15 mins from work and pay peanuts for my apartment.
LA is great if you value weather, outdoor activities, and women.
My approach to deciding where to live is always based on what I love to do with my free time. I always choose to “live” where I play. Mostly because where you work changes... but what you do for fun is more consistent. Right now I live just outside Tahoe and my desk is in Mountain View.
Do you commute daily? I live in MTV but work in Palo Alto maybe once a week. I'm new here but want to move once my lease is up somewhere more natural and cheaper.
I try to me in the office Tuesday thru Thursday. I have the flexibility to either drive or fly directly from Reno airport to San Jose. Which means I am only there two nights a week. I rent a room in house from a friend. I travel to other offices also. So this works out well. The mortgage on our 5bedroom 3 bath house is less than the small apartments rented in San Jose. I have also lived in Seattle (the rain does get to you after a while) Denver (loved it and currently have a fantastic house for sale in Boulder) but became too far from family.
