I currently work as a broker but want to get into IB. Should I focus on taking the CFA or CFP? Ar they worth it?
Study Python
Will do. Second time I’ve heard that so I guess it’s time
I am working to learn Python and complete my CFA. Even equity research roles require python now as part of their job description.
Neither, unfortunately unless you have a connection in IB who can help get you a junior job. If you want to pivot into IB I'd say you need to go to a top MBA program and get in that way.
Technically IB isn't a path for becoming portfolio manager at all.... And cfa isn't meant for IB really either
I see. What would you say is the best path to become PM?
Put your analysis out on Bloomberg and serkingalpha for free. It will be timestamped automatically. Cold call PMs through follow ups from networking events and send links of your prior work. junior analyst--> analyst--> associate--> junior PM --> PM. About 6-10 years. If you're confident in your skills and well off, start an official small fund with friends and family and keep audited track record. Network and reach out to other investors for allocations and create separate investment vehicle for them.
If you want to get into PM then CFA, when I hear IB it’s usually something else entirely.
I see, thanks
What do you do at the brokerage? It looks like you want to become a PM, in which case the CFA is required. What you need to do is maybe start off at a research shop where you’ll do research on individual securities and work your way up from there.
Manage client accounts and sell different services we offer. It’s a boutique firm with mostly LatAm clients
Cfa is 100x harder than cfp
What do you want to do in IB? The CFP definitely no but maybe the CFA depends on what your goal is.
Portfolio management for institutional banks
Then CFA would probably help
