CTO at small tech firm. TC 300k. Good WLB. 3 kids in elementary and middle school. House in upscale neighborhood with good schools. Very low mortgage. Reading blind , seems like I should try for fang. Age 40+. Suggestions?
We call that L4 here at Google. Seriously though, sounds like you're in a good place and if you're content with where you are it's probably not worth it but it's definitely worth it if you're looking for a change (or a new challenge). Don't let strangers on the internet make you believe you have to work for a certain company to be successful.
No shortage of technical challenges and built a great team. L4 Google may not have the whole picture but then he makes more $$ and that makes me think what's all this knowledge for if not $$.
Not sure if you could make significantly more than 300k and it would definitely come with increased CoL
I am in the same boat. But you need to test the market to see how much you can get if you can pass interview. Actually I think it’s not easy for you to get through interview!
You may be right about hitting the interview.
I think CTO. You will be exposed to things you wouldn’t in fang as a regular worker
Hmmm depends. Does your assistant have an assistant who has an intern who has a temp?
Right question is whether you have an assistant who is hot af.
That's a Microsoft culture. I brew my own coffee.
Missing data points. 300k where? In Bay Area? Seattle? Or Texas? How many people do you manage currently?
If you want to make more TC then go to FAANG. At your current company, is there room to make significantly more than 300k?
With kids and low mortgage, I’d go with good WLB.
If you’re asking then you don’t have enough work on your plate. That CTO role or startup might not get you anywhere. Switch!
How many tech people under you?
Hard for us to answer. You sound content and comfortable. Are you willing to trade time for money? If so what is your minimum threshold to move? 100k more? Which is only 60k after taxes assuming CA? 200k more ie 120k net increase? What # changes your life to be worth it? For how many more hours? Worse WLB? Only you can answer those. Spreadsheet it out. I'm always willing to listen for the right terms ($ and time cost / WLB). Find your threshold. Never hurts to look, can always say no and stay put.
