Exploring an internal transfer to a new team in Bay Area from Redmond. Heard career growth can be limited since it could be harder to make a business justification for principle promotions & beyond if center of gravity of org is in Redmond. Is it true?
It can depend on what your team/org are doing. For example, if you're in consulting services and your business is in a major center for your vertical, there can be growth, such as Washington DC for Gov or New York for financial. Another example would be in a dev center. But as xwGP55 said, there gets to be a point where you'll need to go back to the mothership.
Also depends on the team. If the job is already part of a sizeable decentralized team, then there is likely to be more chance for advancement.
On average, What’s the highest most remote folks go? That’s the position I accepted.
What position did you accept? The team I’m looking to move to has 3/4th of its org in Redmond. Most are in the Senior band in the remote team.
PFE :)
If you are good enough, you can get to Principal in remote teams. L66 or higher will be tougher in remote teams as compared to Redmond. I am sure those levels are tough in Redmond too though opportunities will be more. If you want to go beyond a certain level in any company, HQ is always the best option.
