Checking Bags instead of Shipping Items?

My relocation package only reimburses checked bags when traveling to my final destination. The limit is $300. Can I check a packaged box on American Airlines? They are moving all my stuff later on after the home sale but wanted to take a few things with me.

I’ve seen people checking in boxes. They usually wrap em in scotch tape so they don’t explode when stepped on

Thank you for actually answering the question

Yes, I check cardboard boxes frequently, specifically on domestic AA flights.

As long as it fits the size and weight limits, boxes are fine.

Yes, I've flown with a box once or twice. When I was in Asia cardboard boxes seemed more common than luggage. AA will probably make you sign a waiver saying that if the box gets wet and disintegrates it's not their fault.

I’ve seen a machine that wraps in plastic your cardboard box right before the check-in counters. Usually there is a line, so I’m guessing it’s free?

Thanks I will definitely look for this!

If there is anything fragile make sure it is properly protected, airlines aren’t liable. Also nothing that contains lithium batteries or anything flammable like aerosols. Make sure your name and contact number is written on it clearly. Always a good idea to include contact info on the inside too, for anything checked. Bag or box. A business card is what I use. Finally, make it 50lbs or less and not more than 62” (L+W+H). Otherwise, it’s all good.
