Hey guys, I got an offer from a start up with base 125k and some equity. Is this a good salary for someone with 5.5 years of exp or should I counter? No other benefits though. No 401k. Please let me know ASAP as I have to make a decision soon.

Startups (esp early stage ones - those that have no benefits) are expected to give considerably less total comp, in exchange for high equity - “growth potential” You have to decide whether the equity they’re offering you balances out the loss in cold hard cash (and benefits) - effectively, are you willing to gamble on the startup succeeding? A word of caution: do your homework and understand *exactly* what your equity means - can your share be diluted without your consent, under what circumstances will you be able to cash out, etc. There are many complicated ways to screw over your employees on equity comp as a startup, make sure you avoid them, or don’t take the offer
Op- what startup/location and role plus your 5.5 exp is in which all companies and roles. 125k in Orlando Florida is almost 180k in San Jose California... just saying !
Depends on role and location, company valuation and stage. For SWE, base is good if equity is worth at least 75k per year
In addition to just comp you also join start ups for the growth opportunities. So it might also be worth it if you think you can move into leadership or management fast.
If you are here asking this then you care too much about cash flow, and in that case the answer is no, definitely no.
This sounds like an exploding offer...
Location is in Boston. And equity is about 90k shares priced at 5$ per share.
