Is it a wise move from a junior software engineer working on data to a junior data scientist?

In general how does the data scientist track work compared to software/data engineer?

Interesting. Coz in finance, quants (whose skillset resembles DS) get paid a whole lotta more than us lowly devs..

In most tech companies, engineers build tools and make decisions. DS mostly serve/assist engineers by analyzing AB test results and designing metrics. Both the pay and the impact are lower.

Ok i see. How about research scientists at e.g. Brain/FAIR/MSR/etc? I’d assume they get paid more than research engineers?

The answer to this is: depends. Consider this. 1. There are ten times more data engineering jobs than data scientist jobs. 2. Data engineers work on building scalable high-volume infrastructures and workflows, which are generally more valuable skills in the market than the prototype-level code most data scientists are expected to write. 3. Most data scientist jobs today are essentially rebranded data reporting and data analyst jobs. 4. Most companies do not have as clear a career path for data scientist as they have for data engineers. However, there are a few jobs where data scientists can and do make a huge impact on the business and are valued much highly. E.g. if you can create an ML/AI model to increase cart checkout rate by 0.1% for Amazon, that could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. So it is about scale of impact. Look out for companies that have dedicated Data Science teams with tens or hundreds of data scientists. Do not join as a data scientist on a team where you are the lone wolf. Also ask potential employer about career path.

If you are a coder, you won’t like the job at all. Much less options to explore in terms of technology, in swe u can explore data infra teams and ml teams if you are inclined towards data. You don’t have those options as data scientist. What’s your actual interest?

You probably won’t make nearly as much money long term. Most DS’s I know are more analytics heavy than engineering heavy and get paid accordingly.
