Deal with MSFT exploding offer

I have an New Grad FTE offer from Microsoft but it has a very short deadline to accept or reject (less than 10 days). I still have interviews coming up with Google and Uber.

The recruiter won’t extend the deadline and there’s chance I don’t get an offer from Google or Uber so I don’t want to reject them. How to deal with that situation ?

Accept the offer and you can always renege, it looks bad but if you don't want to work for that company because you have a better offer than it doesn't really matter.

Google interview result is typically valid for a year, so you could just start your matching process later with G and effectively spend a respectable amount of time at M (9-12 months)

Microsoft is giving you an unreasonable timeline. Don’t be afraid to accept and then back out if you get the google offer. They will let you interview again and offer you a job again if you ever want to go back there.

Are you sure they wont blacklist the candidate who backs out after accepting offer ?
just thinking about whether it is possible to try Microsoft in the future.

I just asked these questions, since I am going thro the same.

You can get fired from Microsoft and, depending on the circumstances, still come back. Assuming Washington, you are in an at-will employment state. Anyone can leave employment when they want. Most non-competes are also unenforceable. Companies are big boys. They are ok with this. The Hiring Manager won’t like it, but they will have to deal with it. Happens all the time.

You can accept and reneg. Serves them right for trying to pressure you like this.

How is 10 days an exploding offer! All of the companies I am talking with are saying they usually expect an answer within a week or two of final offer.

So an exploding offer is 1 day to decide ? I know a Google offer is valid 1 year.

Google takes like a year to render a final offer...

Nope. That’s too soon for any reasonable turnaround

10 days is reasonable on their part. You can always accept and keep interviewing. If you get a killer offer you can resign after a month. Your boss won't love you but it happens all the time and managers understand. You can tell Google and uber you have another offer and ask if they can speed you through the process. You definitely won't get blacklisted. The blacklist is mostly a myth. If you go on a racist tirade and assault your interviewer you will be blacklisted. If you resign in good faith, you won't. Why would a company blacklist you for something like that? A decent company, of which Microsoft is one, would not. Blacklists are for people who do something REALLY bad.

And what if I renege instead of relocating for 1 month only. Would it get me blacklisted?

What’s the TC, location etc? And how confident are u in getting offers from others like G and U?
    Feb 7 4
    • Amazon / Eng LCKA42
      OP
TC not that high as it’s in Europe and I think I got the max possible after negotiation. For G and U I passed the phone screen and have one full time month to prepare (I don’t have school right now) but there’s still luck involved in the process and also new grad spots are limited so don’t know.

My gut feeling is to try to extend the deadline - if not possible, forget about it, exploding offers are never good offers

I will try but my Google onsite is in mid March so it will take 2 months to get Google response, they probably won’t accept.

Still in negotiation but I will when I get final package. It’s not very interesting considering the CoL of the city.

Decided to reject the offer was 520000 DKK base/20k stocks over 4 years and 12k euros relocation in Copenhagen. Considering high taxes, CoL and also 2.2 score on Glassdoor I don’t think it was a good offer so I rejected. The team doesn’t seem interesting also.

Take that offer. Interview at other places. If you get in those companies leave MS, else stay 😊

It's not very common for offers to be that exploding. It's possible he/she is just rushing you into acceptance. This happened with me for sure, once I joined, I didn't understand the need for that urgency.

Remmber, recruiters' performance is based on how many accepts they bring every cycle, if the hiring manager liked you, it's likely they'll extend the offer after the deadline expires.

Understand that there a lot of words like "likely", "possible" in my above comment, and that was intentional.

They told me about this deadline before I interviewed (I asked). But they increased the package twice after negotiation. Still I’m not huge fan of the team.

How about joined the team and then switching internally after some time? I don't remmeber how long is the waiting period for that.

The other thing that is bugging me is that the offer is not valid across Europe. It’s only for this location and team. But I see your point.

Are you sure that's how recruiters are measured? It isn't in my org.

    • Microsoft setledhapi
It was, a while back. Sorry don't have recent data points on this.

I'd still make the point saying "they want you to join", so instead of sticking to the deadline, and interviewing one more candidate again from the beginning, they would prefer you accepting a little late.

But in this case, he/she already got clmminicatoon from MS that the position is urgent, so it's a different case altogether.

Join MSFT. There won’t be much work load during first few months. Continue preparing for G and U interviews. If you get an offer, decide to quit then.

It’s only fair, we are all here for quality of work AND compensation.

I don't know what everyone's is acting so surprised. This is how it's always been for Microsoft New Grad FTE. I had the exact same 10 days and so did my friends. No recruiter increased the deadline.

They can probably extend it for Uber but Google takes way too from what I've seen. I have seen people have their offers extended in the past though so it is possible it just depends on your recruiter. You can also create technical difficulties for yourself on the career portal and it will easily take months before it's resolved.
