<rant> I personally went to a good well known college, but not an elite one. I joined Google few years ago and I am good at my job. However, I possess some deep insecurity about graduates from elite universities like Stanford, Harvard, MIT etc. I have always tended to compare myself against the some of the graduates from these universities that I know and get depressed. My ex-gf's new bf is also a graduate student at one of these universities in some random non-tech department. I am trying to validate myself by convincing myself that most graduates of these elite universities are equally bad as I am. This is one of the hard days I am having. </rant>
I don’t know why you need to convince yourself. Their idiocy is self evident.
I feel you. I’m an immigrant with terrible education and a difficult upbringing. Every day is a struggle, but hey at least you’re able to work alongside those who went to elite schools. I’m sure you’re doing better than the people you grew up with.
I actually am. I was trained to always look towards successful people, but never towards my peers.
Elite school != competent
Haha, good to see this. I needed someone else saying this too !
I went to a top 4 CS school. I'm at Intel getting paid 🥜. Feel better about yourself now?
Same went to top cs school and am doing a lot worse than OP ; OP , just be happy and content with your position
Is that a masters degree from Carnegie Mellon?
Who tf cares? Let’s face it: It’s a fucking educational institution that admits 18 year old individuals who have no clue wtf they really want to do w/ their lives but however society has decided they must select their career path at that age; meanwhile the little shits parents must fork over the ludicrous amounts of money for an undergraduate degree that is more or less the taught with the same material at all colleges (only so many ways to skin a cat); and at the end of the day they’re really buying an alumni network of wealthy human beings which does have a single iota of relevance to intellect. TL;DR doesn’t matter
After 4 or 5 years out of school and on the job nobody cares, or even knows what school these so-called elites went to. Besides, it’s the elite schools that have a higher percentage of TAs (teacher assistants) teaching the classes as the Profs are making money doing research.
Did you want an elite school very much but did not get in after high school? If you would like maybe try applying for a master or PhD in an elite school?
Yes, I did want Stanford a lot. I guess, when my ex dumped me and started a relationship with a guy over there, that just reopened the wounds. Practically speaking though, I am not sure if doing a master or PhD makes sense.
Sometimes I try to convince myself that everyone is equally important by reading things like: everyone has 100,000,000,000 neurons (100 billion) and everyone has 100,000 heartbeats per day. It is quite amazing.
There are a lot of not so bright kids going to Stanford who graduate with CS degrees. On the other hand there are significantly more who are brilliant. Should you be worried about this, absolutely not.
