Product designer here working at a startup. Looking for advice on ways to max comp while minimizing stress/workload. (I.e. Work smart not hard.) Would like to hit $200-300k TC in the next 2 years. Open to switching roles and making a lateral move. Thinking of moving into management or PM role next since Design career trajectory seems slow/underpaid. Tricky part is I’d like to stay in the DC area for family reasons — any ideas? Currently trying to carve a nitch in this city since there’s lack of design/tech talent here. YoE: 3 TC: $130,000 Geo: Washington DC Ultimate goal: retire early and start startups, or become an angel investor Ps. Pursuing my own startup is an option too. (Flew out to YC last month but got rejected.) But I’d still like some more conservative options while I try to grow this business.
Nice TC for a DC startup.
130K base or with stock option?
Base. I’m not including paper money
Look into taking a role at Oracle. TC is absurd and there’s a huge WFH/work remote/fuck it why even do work culture. AND plenty of interesting things to do if you really want to.
Thanks! Will look into this
Happy to review your portfolio! I assume you actually want to do work, which really is optional at Oracle. Trying to hire people who do work.
Stay with design if you think you can hit senior level at Amazon on a sane team with the move into “National Landing”. It’d be tough to arrange and ensure sanity, though. Otherwise, PM seems like a solid route.
Great idea! Started looking at AMZ offerings in the area
