Can someone explain what this is about ?

At Amazon, a manager can put someone that reports to them on an HR "dev" or "coaching" plan. It is an official plan that leads to one of two things. 1) you "improve" and get off the plan. 2) you go to a "pivot" which is getting fired basically. Once you are on the "plan" you can no longer switch teams. You are stuck with the manager that put you there. They can and will make your life a living hell. I know several people (and now me!) who were on it. They all had to leave amazon. I am in the middle, so not sure, but the way my manager is bullying me, it is 99% sure I will be pushed out. He keeps changing what "good" is so I can never hit it. He is keeping detailed notes on everything I am doing that is "not good enough". There is no coaching but only bullying in this plan. HR will not talk to you. Your colleagues will be encouraged to turn on you (and they will to your disbelief) and you are wise to look for a job outside amazon. Once you leave this way, you can never work for Amazon again. Moral: if you don't trust your boss has your back, switch teams at once. I knew he didn't but foolishly waited too long. Now I"m stuck. Amazon has a dark side. A very dark side. And you will see it if you get put on one of these evil plans.

If you have a dev plan that isn't a "pip" isn't that just goal setting? I thought Dev plan and pip are the same thing. Or maybe they have changed the process recently.

Amazon KGvK44 Mar 3, 2018

They are not. Dev plan is a preliminary pip that makes managers immune to an appeal. Because then they can say that the employee was warned and was given coaching

My answer was not an option. Told my boss to fuck off the next day I was in the office, quit and got a better job.

Amazon KGvK44 Mar 3, 2018

I wish I could have done that

Great! Where do you work now? And are you tech or non tech? How many years of experience do you have? Kudos to you man!

Isnt Dev plan also used for everyone who's not a role model. Basically for setting personal and professional goals?

Amazon sooptroop OP Mar 3, 2018

That’s individual dev plan. What’s under discussion is a dev plan arising from being put on dev list due to perceived poor performance

Amazon hLED85 Mar 4, 2018

there is terminology conflict here. everyone supposed to have “career development plan”. but here it’s about “development list”

The data looks unbelievable. Is it actually true that around 70% of the people passed dev plan ? My understanding was putting on a dev plan is to start creating a paper trail to then put you in pip. Are dev plans even fair to pass ?

Passed the first in 2017. Returned to one last month. Was looking to move team couldn’t find a position. It’s really depending on your manager. To pass the first, went no life for 4 months.

Amazon devil87 Aug 1, 2019

It depends upon manager, i was put as i suggested her to behave nicely with other team members, she kept watch prepared data points which i faught n discussed too, still i was put under devplan in few months after first jibe. I Don't see door out of dev plan still, everyone in org suggested me to leave. So all depends upon manager. He can guide you And take u out of dev plan with making u better at ur jib or put u in pip for personal reasons or u really didn't do well in dev plan

Sounds like some managers use it as a bit of an ego trip against vocal employees.
