Hey, anyone know of some devops positions opening up in the bay area or Portland? I got 5 YOE. I'm not great at coding interviews though. I can Automate and all but reversing strings in place and shit is not my strong suit.
Try SRE style roles too. Production Engineer at Facebook would be a good thing to look at too
If he’s not good at coding he needs to stay away from SRE, G or FB. SRE bar is practically SWE bar. Anything at G, FB and even SRE at Amazon will go into algorithms/DS.
Yup, the SRE book by Google mentions they use their own developers as SRE. Some go back and forth between being SRE and swe. One or my friends from LinkedIn too. Dropbox and LinkedIn will also demand strong coding. IMHO stay away from ops routine and learn to code, year after year, until you get it. It's the best thing to do. Even if it'll take 5 years.
Apply for cloud engineer roles. That’s mostly terraform and sometimes some kubernetes. Learn light coding with python. Good luck!
Are you sure there will be only light coding for such role?
Yes. Most of the time you don’t need any coding. Just some shell to setup pipelines.
Yo, apply to ibm for sre on iks. You’ll do kubernetes infra work and last I heard there’s no lc questions. Maybe fizz buzz. Can’t be sure because hr changes the process every year
Leetcode
Why not invest the time to improve that skill a bit? It's an exercise for the brain, it's healthy, let your neurons and synapses have some sports :). There's good chance it'll help you write better code overall in the future.
I've been doing hacker rank and stuff. I just think if they expect a coding interview then it's more Dev than ops and I am definitely the reverse.
