Seeing some gossip online that Facebook started it in order to train their ml systems in age progression.. is it true?
I don’t think it’s for ML, but certainly possible for trying to regain relevance after the endless cycles of bad press
Why would they need to? Clearly they can look at your photos and see upload dates, and then do comparisons. There are even open source tools that detect faces.
What Ebay said^^^ op you are trolling to believe that stuff right?
Why would Facebook do this? Forget about whether we have or not the data, what's the master plan behind an algorithm that can do this?
Train AI on how people age, so it can make better predictions about how someone looked in the past or will look in the future. I don’t think Facebook did this. They have the data already as users say above (wether they can use it, it’s a different question, and it’s unrelated to the 10YearChallenge). But how about an external researcher that will then look at public posts? Someone that’s not Facebook.
Sure, like the FBI may be interested in that. But Facebook? How does it fit Facebook's products or business plan?
Facebook already has access to years and years worth of your photos. They can ML the crap put of all your photos.
The people starting that rumor have no understanding of ML and no understanding of the vast amounts of photo information Facebook already has.
This question is almost offensively stupid
Definitely for face recognition training.

Having the idea to do it is one thing, getting people to participate though?
