I've been offered Director of AI position at a fortune 500 company, TC $260k. This is 'real' director position, albeit a small one. My initial team is 10+, with mandate to grow to 20-30 within 2 years. Position is below VP level, above Senior Managers. Company is not in tech sector. I'm still waiting for offers from FAANG, but they're not as high level as this one, although TC will be comparable. *** Assuming my end goal is to get to FAANG/tech and be technical manager *** 1) If I do well in this position, leave at team size 30 in 3-4 years, what level can I target in FAANG/tech companies? 2) Is it hard to switch to FAANG/tech for technical management from such a position? Or should I keep trying for a senior IC in FAANG and move up from there? Thanks.
If you want to make C-suite or partner which path is faster? What’s your end goal here is what really matters.
Honestly, it's TC first, impact (seniority/level) second. The position would have good impact. TC is ok, since I know Managers at FAANG earn the same.
Managers at FAANG in AI earn more than $260k
As with any role in fang, it's a lot easier to come in at higher level than level up inside; by a lot. Pick director role and come to fang later.
I play devil's advocate. Why would FAANG hire someone from a second rate nontech company for a senior leadership position? Why not just win over a competitor's employee who is ready experience wise for the position?
I’ve heard this too. Why is that? I’m ignorant about how it works inside FAANG
It matters more what you did than what company you did it for.
As someone who is doing AI/ML work but not in tech, I can attest to the fact that this is so not true... I always have to put up with the 'you're not tech so why do you wanna be one of us' inferiority bullshit pre judgement at every interview
What does a 'Director of AI' do, exactly? Are you like an engineering manager for an ML team?
tc of 260k is just e4, not even senior eng. 4 levels lower than director
fb director should earn 1m roughly
FB directors are generally stanford professor level
260k as "real Director" for AI? Hahaha...oh wait, you're being serious? Let me laugh harder. HAHAHA.
Thanks Google... This is non tech companies so they don't have much AI expertise or staff. My job is to take charge of AI in all aspects for the company.
Then you should get paid more than 260k.
Engineers with 5 YOE in faangs make 330-350K. I would say it would be better for you wrt TC if you join one of the faang’s..
Ask for more money. 260k isn't enough for those responsibilities.
What's the salary range of m1 managers in netflix?
Downlevel. All my peers were directors/vp’s elsewhere at tier 2/tier 3 companies and came in as lowly eng managers. I imagine coming in from a shitty Lockheed or Boeing would be very difficult to make a case for director position at fang let alone eng manager
If you do well building a team from 10 to 30 and produce good results, you should be a strong candidate for a manager or even director position at Netflix if your skill set matches an open position. Your TC would be significantly above $260k as a leader in AI regardless of the title you have at Netflix.
