Just joined a FANG company. All my team mates are Chinese. Literally, all of them. Dont have anything against Chinese in general but it is kind of weird situation. Where is diversity?
Mixed team here. So much better. I wont let managers who report to me create monocultures. Don't know why I seem to be the only one who believes that these monoethnic teams are a bad thing.
You won't let managers create monocultures? What are you, some sort of mafia boss or kingpin?
What are you, one of those Indian managers who only hires Indians? Or one of those Chinese managers who only hires Chinese?
R u Chinese? If not, you are a diversity hire!
I am European
I have a feeling you are an Indian with 95% confidence. Only Indians have been specifically pointing out Chinese and complain about them in Blind as if this is only done by Chinese. In general, this happens to non Indians more as Indians are majority in tech. Bad news for you and all of us in tech: Everyone from developing countries does it. It doesn’t matter what your race or ethnicity is. Chinese do that. Indians do that. Russians do that. Real minorities in tech can’t do that due to too small number but I am pretty sure they would do that too if number reaches threshold. Education is the key to this problem to make you realize you perhaps have unconscious bias and need to avoid creating monolithic culture but that only happens in a few developed countries only. People from developed countries generally tend to avoid the same kind knowing this (they also have racists and the likes but percentage is lower). People from developing world tend to think they know the talent and are objective and end up hiring and promoting the same kind of people. Developing countries don’t afford these kind of education but many people in tech don’t seem like admitting this and try to educate Americans instead. With glass half full mindset: Maybe they realized this is a problem and they decided to start breaking this culture by hiring an Indian guy to the group.
Good point. As I said, I am not Indian. I would be more than happy to have Indians on the team to get new perspective on things.
The rule of thumb: if you can’t spot the diversity hire on your team, you are it.
I prefer to think I was a bar raiser;))
No US born on my entire team.
This is so correct yet to me so strange.
