Do people that work more actually get more done?

Why does it seem like the people who consistently work late do poor quality work? It seems like they constantly come up with bad solutions and end up creating a whole bunch of problems that other people have to fix. It’s almost like they are overworking, becoming mentally fatigued, and as a result actually getting less done than someone working normal hours. I’ve seen this at several companies. Has anyone else noticed this?

Usually not enough to justify it

I've seen the opposite as well: people who work their ass off and delivering high quality results and underperformers who leave "on time". Not sure if one can generalize like that.

Depends entirely on the job and the person

I have a colleague who spends 10+ hours everyday in office. He says he likes to be in office to escape from loneliness after hard divorce. So, there can be any number of reasons for people to spend more time in office. Not necessarily every one underperform.

Working late doesn't mean that they are doing it to be productive or overwork. Depression is very common. I suffer from it. I find it hard to get out of bed in the morning. I wake up at 6 am but can't get out of bed until like 9 or 10am. Heart rate get very fast, etc. After years of taking serotonin and dopamine tablets, these days I need to do one hour of yoga, half hour cardio, tons of dark chocolate and I'm still finding it hard to manage. I work late at office (past 10 pm) because it offers me the chance to be alone and in fact because of depression I need to put in more number of hours (2x) than what I would otherwise have to put in to get my stuff done. I'm at the lead level and as I go up in my career this gets more severe. Worst was during the PhD.
