I doubt, but what do I know. If that happens, I think it has to be a major change to business strategy. If that is the case, most likely you do not work for that company during that time, as there is exponentially high confusions, politics, and fights with such business transitions

Layoffs are not expensive. Paying for 2-3 months. How it is different from keeping the employee and keep paying? At least they know they don't have to pay after 3 months.
They need someone to run the business.
HR doesn't like to lay off more than 10% of the workforce in under a year. It's way too demoralizing. This is in most HR textbooks.
Always be ready
Always expect to be laid off, and you’ll probably be right.
