Quick poll for those in serious relationships. Have you given your SO your passwords (for email, social, etc)?
she has the password to my heart
I don’t even know my own passwords. Strong passwords + password manager.
Then, does he/she have access to the master password? Don’t take my question too literally
No she doesn’t. She has passwords in her own account for certain shared services, and is an authorized user on joint accounts.
For basic stuff like email and social yes but she doesn't know any important ones like my banking info
this is madness. Go the opposite route. We have a shared bank account for shared payments but separate social media.
Wait, you think your personal communications are less important than the bank account (which in the US is shared anyways by law)? Out of curiosity, do you also read each other’s mail? (Paper mail)
Some things yes. Others no.
About 10 years ago I got burned by this after a breakup. It was destructive and hurtful. Since then I’ve made it my policy that no one, regardless of relationship or status, gets my passwords. I’ve gotten a few eyebrows raised when I’ve had to unlock a device and wouldn’t share it, but have never been burned since. It has nothing to do with with my level of trust, it’s just my personal policy. I can’t recommend this way of operating enough. Just got out of a long term relationship and I felt so much better never feeling like I had to lock anything down, because I know they never had access.
They have my basic password, but not the banking ones or personal email one.
Long-term married here. Full access to each other’s passwords and there’s a place (unfindable by others) where we also have our master 1Password keys in case of death.
Shared the same password manager, made things easy. Separated them out when separating.
She knows all the passwords except banking, investment and email accounts
We have a shared email and password for things like Netflix. Otherwise we don't know each others. Should something happen they can recover my LastPass account.
Good that you bring up digital legacy. It’s not what I had in mind when I created this poll, but I am actually quite interested in that topic lately.
