I'm interested in hearing from everyone because I'm trying to cast a wide net. Most job posts I've seen are for new grads or have a requirement of 3, 4, or 5 years of experience. I wouldn't hit the 3 year mark until February 2020 and I worry about what the job market will be like then. Other job posts require knowledge of a specific stack but at my first/current job we use a homegrown web framework. This makes it seem like there's very few opportunities I'm eligible for. How strict are these requirements at your company? Also, if I have 1 yr 11 months of work experience (and a CS degree), would your team consider that to clear the bar for 2 yoe? Thanks for reading.
Indeed is not strict about yoe or too picky about which technologies you’ve worked on in the past. We hire engineers at all levels as long as they can demonstrate that they bring value. If you’d like to chat more, feel free to PM me. Also, 1 year 11 month is more or less 2 yoe. What you did in that time matters a lot more than the fact that it’s 1 month less than 2 years.
What location? A recruiter from indeed told me that Austin is the only location that they are hiring non senior engineering candidates for.
Maybe that’s what recruiters are specifically going after but I’ve referred non senior engineers in the past few months and they were brought on site in Seattle and SF.

In general, those kinds of requirements in a job description are not meant to be taken literally. With 2 YOE, you should feel comfortable applying for jobs which state anywhere from 0-5 years or so. Knowledge of a specific stack is usually more of a nice-to-have than a hard requirement, especially if you are a quick learner. If there are multiple applicants then you may lose out to someone who has those skills, but that shouldn’t stop you from applying. I see someone from Oath has already posted here, so I won’t try to recruit you myself. Good luck!
YOLO it. I mean be reasonable but if you think you can do the job go for it.
Yes, just go for it.
Yes. Example: me, and some new grads
How many yoe did you have when you switched companies? Did you interview with companies other than Bloomberg? My concern is that someone with 2 yoe doesn't get considered for new grad roles and the only other roles available require 3+ yoe.
Yes. With 1.5 YOE, I had onsite interviews for back end roles with Airbnb and Uber, and full stack with Square and Bloomberg. Front end with Google, only by choice (since my C++ and Python skills are weak and Google's interviews are language-constrained).
I don’t know if this applies to you or not, but if it does you might find it helpful: https://hbr.org/2014/08/why-women-dont-apply-for-jobs-unless-theyre-100-qualified
Yep it applies. "a McKinsey report found that men are often hired or promoted based on their potential, women for their experience and track record" -> being hired based on potential seems like a foreign concept to me.
You should be eligible for sde2 at Amazon
What is pyladies?
PyLadies isn't my employer. It's a volunteer-driven, international mentorship group for female Python devs. We raise money to sponsor women to attend PyCon and all the chapters host local meetups. https://www.pyladies.com I met some great people through volunteering with them!
