To all data viz gurus: do you still recommend Edward Tufte's books? If yes, aren't they outdated? If no, what other bibles/books are out there?
Most viz books say pretty much the same thing. It's all about clean presentation and directing the eye, which isn't rocket surgery. If you already read a conceptual book, it's probably more important to get aquainted with data viz folks' portfolios. That way you learn which tools fit which jobs often, what the limitations are, and what to quickly reference as needed. Also practice by recreating and then improving some of those viz's
Where do you get access to such portfolios?
Shockingly, searching "data visualization portfolio"
Still love it. Solid principles.
I recommend you go see tufte when he comes to town. Cost is reasonable. They are coffee table books for me that I skim through periodically.
+1. The one-day class is awesome.
Nope.
I attended the one day class a few years ago and was underwhelmed. Maybe I'm just not a designer but it seemed like he could have condensed it down to about 1-2 hours, but people won't pay the ticket prices unless it's a full day so he just repeats the topic several times
I still love it, it teaches you to think differently.
