Eng Manager: Lyft or Square

I have two offers:
Lyft: M1, TC: 470k (225 base/860 stocks / 30 sign on bonus)
Square: L6, TC: 420k (205 base / 780 /20)

Lyft compensation is better but with everything that's going on in ride-sharing feels risky.

I loved both teams and both managers. It seems like at Square I have a better opportunity to grow. But it's difficult to say for sure.

YOE: 13 / 4 in management

Update:
Interview experience:
Lyft:
1. Call with a hiring manager
2. 1st onsite: system design and two management/leadership interviews
3. 2nd onsite: system design, two more sessions on management/project management/ leadership.

Square:
1. Call with a hiring manager
2. 1st onsite: system design, coding (pair programming)
3. 2nd onsite: system design, coding, 3 sessions on management/leadership etc.

Lyft will start laying off before you know it

Hmm didn't Uber CTO talk about potential layoff publicly a few months ago before the layoff? I usually 'trust' words from higher up. The message I mentioned was delivered by the engineering head EVP.

I might be too optimistic and have drunk too much coolaid.

Lyft is very risky comparing to FANG. It might not be a good option for you if you don't want the risk.

I would personally recommend you for square based on all the data point you have presented.

Sorry to hear about your wife, @zzfd12. Lyft post is correct: Uber CTO hinted about layoffs in AH weeks before. At no point did CTO say people were safe.

Why did you assume I was talking about wife? I said spouse.
I'm a female and that was my husband.
I guess he heard that not from Thuan.

Infra is an interesting place to be at. There are several bad orgs in Lyft but I think infra is not one of them. Don't know enough to say good things about it either

One thing to say about Lyft. For 470k, they are probably offering you a entry level manager role. Scope at Lyft is very limited. You might not find challenging work at Lyft. Only come if you are okay with that for at least a year.

Lyft does not allow changing team within a year.

Thanks! That's good to know. The problems they wanted me to solve are not that challenging. That's why I was concerned about growth.

One upside is that there are quite a lot of senior people that you could potentially learn from.

Lyft is a very political place, if you love politics, come. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend you to take square instead

Square. Work life balance, stability and culture are all much better there.

I have a strong feeling that November/December will be filled with layoffs wrapped inside of "restructuring".

Don’t think Lyft is that risky right now. Stock is low enough that the shares have room to grow (nice upside), and the business is in a good place. Not worried about layoffs, if it happens it won’t be on eng. would not use Uber as an indicator for Lyft on this. If, based on the responses from others, you want Square, then use the Lyft offer to leverage Sq for more money. Why sacrifice $200k+ over 4yrs?

yes it is funny that Uber recently laid off nearly 1k people because they grew too fast and in the wrong direction.

Kabbage is not a public company so compensation can't be matched.
I'm in SF and it's their satellite offices.
Benefits are not great too if you compare to other companies in Bay Area.
