What are some engineering-first companies in NYC? I say engineering first like Google and maybe Facebook in contrast to product-driven like Amazon or sales-driven like Salesforce and Oracle. I don wan’t to work in a place where tech isn’t the profit center. Good indicators of this are: a highly technical non-commodity product, founders have a strong technical background, more devs than sales or product people, high pay, does tech for the sake of solving a cool problem. Some ideas -Google -FB -Dropbox (becoming less so since they pivoted to enterprise) There are very few in NYC and they are a dying breed elsewhere.
I left NYC for this reason. I had a great career there but after 21 years there felt I still needed west coast tech experience. I’ve been with Amazon in Seattle for a year now. I’m already thinking of my next move as Amazon is a dead end already, possibly stay here or to CA. I’ve already decided that I’ll likely head back to NYC area after a few more years because now the tech-heavy culture isn’t as great as I’d thought it would be. But when I’m back I won’t likely pursue full-time work, only contracting and teaching.
Believe it or not... hedge funds and HFT
Why's this hard to believe?
We're here!
You mean companies who encourage writing code endlessly without making a product customers want to use?
Bloomberg
Amazon is absolutely a tech first company, what the hell?
They’re a dying breed because at scale they lead to shitty products and a toxic culture (exemplified by Google). As an engineer who sought out those companies for the first 10 years of my career - I get it. But a company where eng is an equal partner with the other parts of the business gives better long-term results. We on the other side will be happy to welcome you back to building real shit that matters, once you experience enough of it to feel the same way. Good luck!
I guess you're talking about HQ and not NYC
Lyft is ramping up their NYC office but they're only looking for seniors ATM.
Seems like Lyft is only looking for mid senior in general...
