FB: Is prior management experience required for manager role?

Is prior management experience mandatory for being considered for engineering manager role at Facebook? I've been a tech lead for at least 5 years now with about 10 years of total experience. If yes, how is an engineer supposed to become a manager? Rise up in the same company? Do a MBA?

Best way is to first become a manager in the same company you are currently with and then move out to a different company.

I see. Are all managers made only this way?

^for the most part, yes. Why would we hire you into a role you have never done?

Amazon hires first time managers.

They do but i’d strongly recommend coming in as IC unless you have prior management experience at FAANGish companies. Otherwise you run a risk of downleveled which is way way worse than coming in as a higher level IC, proving yourself and then transitioning to people manager.

Why would a manager be down leveled? (aren't ICs more technical than managers?? Lol)

Being technical is not the only criteria for leveling. The higher up you move, the more important leadership competencies, experience and soft skills, become.

Unless you are known in the industry (think Partner level at Microsoft) you probably aren’t going to be hired at FB or Google or any similar companies as a manager without any management experience.
