How long does it take for fbs comp team to respond back after you countered the offer?
Depends on how far off the numbers are, which level of management has to get involved to defend the candidate for the salary requested. I’ve seen a week, I’ve seen two months.
If the recruiter is able to approve your counter offer then you didn't ask for enough. I'm not a big fan of back and forth, the counter is the counter and pretty much accept it or not. In priority you ask for more base. That'll drive your bonus and comp until the end of time. Also get more one time signing stock. They should be flexible up on that for sure. My 2 cents having been on both sides
How does this team work, my recruiter gave me a number and now he is saying comp team came back with a bit smaller number. Is the recruiter just messing with me or does that happen?
I'd be surprised if they were playing games with you here. It's possible that the recruiter brought you the offer before comp approved (which I don't think is normal). Anothet possibility is that they gave an in-band offer that they are authorized to do, but comp lowered the band without them knowing. Either way, the more information you give them about what you're leaving on the table, the better they'll be able to do.
Can you share the numbers?
In my case it took them one day to come up with an answer but the recruiter knew I had another offer at hand
The comp team gets together 1-2 times a week (depends on level). The recruiter pulls together the "package" interview feedback, suggested level and offers, competing offers, etc and bring it in. For the higher levels (L5+) or more controversial offers the recruiter goes around and looks for "supporting managers". As one of those you come in and make a case for the higher offer / level
About a week
