Giving Amazon recruiter salary range

Jul 17 20 Comments

An Amazon recruiter asked for my desired salary range. I avoided answering the question for now. Will Amazon keep pushing to get you to tell them a range? The role was for SDE 2 in the bay area, 8 years of experience.

CA passed a law where 1) employees cannot ask for previous comp and 2) employers are required by law to provide applicants with the pay scale for a position upon a reasonable request.

Amazon definitely tried to bamboozle me then. I've been aware of the first law for a long time. The second is new to me, that's a great law right there.

Sure, but does the pay scale need to include all forms of compensation? That is, if salary is capped—such as at amazon, does the recruiter need to provide then TC range or just the salary range?

Sounds about right to me. Bay Area is slightly higher since it’s a higher COL location. What team? Sunnyvale or SF?

Sunnyvale. Are the AWS teams in Sunnyvale or SF?

250 +/- 10. I think you should let them know, if you’re interviewing at multiple places and want to save some time post offer. I feel it’s right from the recruiter to ask for the desired salary range, quite honestly one should be smart enough to know his worth :)

Yeah, that would be the way to go if I wanted to avoid bullshit. I'm thinking of only using Amazon for practice, so don't want to take myself out of the Amazon's next top code monkey running.

Yep makes sense, I did the same actually. I start with a low number and negotiate hard later if I have competing offers. Since it’s not a startup, works out well.

I once pissed off a Salesforce recruiter by telling my expectations, lesson learnt.
      P.S: I’d never join/apply again to Salesforce

Crap. I actually just pinged a Salesforce recruiter, don't think I'd like to work there as well, but they might serve as practice. Can you pm me?

What state do you live in? I would politely decline and instead ask them what their comp range is for the position.
