Google L3 vs. L4 Interview

2.5 YOE 220k TC My Google recruiter has told me that I will be getting interviewed as a L4. They also told me not to worry about system design questions, and that Google only asks those to people with 5+ YOE. Is my recruiter correct in that I will not be asked system design questions? If that is true, then what is the difference between a L3 vs L4 interview? Given I only have 2.5 YOE, would requesting to be interviewed as a L3 increase my chances of being hired?

Yes. The l4 basically means designs with guidance. L5 means design independently

Recruiter said the same thing to me and I was asked a system design question with 1.5 yoe

Wtf. I think if they ask me one, I will straight up tell them I am not prepared for this because my recruiter told me not to worry

If you do very well in the interviews they'll give you L4, otherwise you'll get L3. System design isn't required at L4 for Google. No reason not to shoot for it, if the interviews are as your recruiter described (L4 without sys design) then it's just a L4/L3 loop and you'll automatically be considered for L3 if your interview performance wasn't good enough.
