Google comp is getting really bad

What is happening with G comp. They are low balling so much based off two of my colleagues who went there recently. (I'm surprised they took the offer)

My Amazon offer was much higher than theirs. (We have same levels of experience, but obviously interviews are a hit or miss)

It seems F and N are the best comp among FANG. G has moved to the bottom below A in my book.

I get people want G on their resume, but is it really worth low TC ?

Edit:
Their comp wasn't any different to their current Microsoft comp and they went from Senior(63/64) to L4 there.

The only positive was G does regular refreshers so eventually do better.

I went from Senior(64) to L6(Amazon) and making 130+k more.

They are especially bad at initial offer. Mine was 220k for L4 and jumped to 370k after giving compete offer. Still declined.

how did you like quora compared to nflx

    • Quora vhQW50
@murat I accepted the offer but haven't joined yet so there is no comparison. Overall I feel quora is decent but 4 years is long enough to become boring and I want to work on larger scale problem.

Isn’t there a risk to joining nflx though? I’ve heard them letting people go often. (Not trying to rain on your parade, that tc is awesome and nflx is tier 1. this is genuinely a concern I’ve had with applying to nflx).

Also, how was your interview? Lots of LC questions? System design?

    • Quora vhQW50
@Liu Kang Yes there is such risk but after brief hesitation I decide to take it since there are many upsides.

It depends on team but there was no LC coding in my loop, it was take home coding. SD of course every company has it.

It is hilarious how people find these salaries to be 'bad'. Looks like tech bros need money management classes.

Buying a house is a choice. No one is forcing you to spend $2M on the house. This is why I recommend money management classes.

Sure, everything is a choice. Marriage, kids, houses. All choices. You can choose to be old, alone and part of the renting underclass for life. Enjoy your choices.

The choice I made is to not live in the Bay Area. I'm a house owner. Didn't need to spend anywhere close to $2M on it. I'm enjoying my choices indeed. 🙂

Fair enough. I cant make that decision now due to the fact that I am divorced and my kids are here so I have to make the best of my choices in a constrained environment.

Google tried to hire me last year. Amazon matched and exceeded their comp. Talked to Google recruiter again this year - told them my target number. Radio silence. Google seems to only be able to compete for 1) lazy people who want to rest and vest 2) career parkers who will stay at Google for the next 20 years 3) people who want to take a TC hit to put the Google name on their resume for a few years 4) people moving from other parts of the country or crappy jobs in SV and don't know they can do better. If you don't fit into any of those categories, Google doesn't seem competitive.

It all depends on how much G wants you. If you killed it in the interviews they will open up the wallet than if you just barely skated in.
      Apr 21
    • Google Mr. Glass
Yeah, sounds like G didn't want you that much if they went silent. It's important to do really well on the interviews if you want a high TC, not merely clear the bar.
      Apr 21
    • Amazon Break1M
I was offered a well above band offer. They just interviewed me at the wrong level. PS I wasn't clear but "went silent" refers to a separate interaction 5 months after I had declined their above band offer last year.

Google will at best do 5-10% hike of existing TC. Not much negotiation without competing offers. Saw so many leave amazon for google, only to have lower eventual TC because of how the stocks performed.

G offer is worse than F in general. Even after negotiation at both the difference is still a little bit significant. G has more than 100k employees, F has 25k according to last report. G cap is 863B, F is 509B. So basically each employee at F earns more money for the company, hence the difference in comp is still... cheap tho 🤣

Says a dumbass working at a no name company named Zulily , if you actually observe the stats, which is something you probably couldn't do without being handheld, you'd see that the majority of people working at Google are either Asian ( this includes south Asia for people who tend to discredit India for being on the continent when it clearly is) or White. They also tend to be male. You bring up trophy hires as if they make up the majority of the demographic . It amazes me how dumb you are. Obviously your insecurities are getting the best of you. You sound like some crybaby who just got a rejection from G after not being able to invert a tree. Sorry to break it to you dumbass, but considering you work for a shit company like Zulily , you didn't get accepted into G because you lack intelligence, not because some female took your spot

The recruiter won't send you the finalized offer until you verbally confirm you will sign, so how would that expire? Truth is Google takes forever to get back to you and you should be interviewing at several companies if you're looking to jump ship.

Google didn't match my competing Amazon and another non-fang offer either and lately I have been seeing more threads talking about the same thing. I ended the conversations on great terms with my recruiter but I doubt I would try again at Google. It seemed such a huge waste of time especially when they knew at the start I had other offers and promised to beat them if I make it through the interview rounds.

That's fair. If you are coming from a crappy company/job or are outside of SV, this is true. But if you interview around, you will find better offers from others in SV. The only reason people go with Google in that case is the brand, not the comp or the work.

In the Blind era they should have known that they need to get competing offers. I got multiple competing offers and had a huge negotiation power that I got a standard L5 MTV offer as L4 in Seattle.

No competing offers means you have very little negotiation power.

  • Microsoft no-sql
Probably google thinks msft doesn’t pay well so they lowball
    Apr 21 3
    • Google quy
It’s because Google does not respect MS’s level. If they got L5, the comp will be better than L63/L64.
      Apr 21
    • Microsoft no-sql
It might not matter much what level you are in msft. I know lots of L62 joined back 5 years are making less than l60. All matters is what you make currently. No one asks level in interviews. Unless new company offers more than 20% Tc just no use of switching. Switching for brand or ‘fang coolaid’ is purely bs
      Apr 21
    • Google quy
I believe the lowball offer still match or slightly beats current pay, otherwise, no one will accept it. There is standard offer per level by Google, but the range can be very wide depending on competing.

  • Microsoft / Eng faang1357
On compete offer negotiation, does Google recruiter ask for the actual offer letter or just an email confirmation from other company recruiter is enough?

Out if curiousity, define lowball. What would be a Google low-ball in Pittsburgh? How about in MTV? For an L3. And what would be the average offer without competing offers?
    Apr 21 1
    • Amazon / Eng Yolo!
Smaller than 6 inches is low ball, bigger the better.
      Apr 21
  • Google quy
For level, MS L63/64 is G L4 by default. Someone can get L5 but it’s a small number. For comp, without competing offer, G just offers the max of standard L4 and your current comp. With competing, it can be very high.
