Google considering L4 due to past interview
YOE 18 Embedded SWE. Try for Consumer HW. Last year, Interviewed for L5, did terrible. Got L4. Turned down. This year, interviewed for L6, went to L6 HC, they simply say leadership and system design not strong. Total BS. Anyways, HC approved but they asking VP to decide L4 or L5 JUST because I had L4 last year. Otherwise it would have been automatic L5. Any advice? Should have Apple offer in hand very soon. If Apple gives ICT5, will G uplevel back to L6?
After all these old people from Amazon and Microsoft joined Google, they began to run the leveling shit show. Poor Google
Yep you are being screwed over past performance. L4 to l5 is just a huge huge grind purely based on process
So they’re offering you 4 this year because they offered you 4 last year and you declined. They’re either dumbasses or they don’t see your value. Either way don’t accept it.
To confirm, they didn't decide L4 yet. They are asking VP to decide L4 or L5 , maybe to be safe? They are going to ask HM's manager, I.e. director to give strong reco letter to support L5. HM had already given strong reco letter for L6

I am planning to apply soon. Which role/level should I look for when applying with 12.5 yoe SWE , currently a Principal Engineer, Level 5 at Oracle. For Google India positions.
Go for L6. I was IC-5 at Oracle. interviewed for L6, got L5. Wait, principal is IC-4. Then go for L5.
L4 with 18 yoe? hahaha. that’s messed up. just go elsewhere.
