I'm curious why so many people on Blind are hell bent on working at Google, especially if you're a more experienced engineer. I interviewed there in SV recently and got an L5 offer, but it was my worst interview experience. Half my interviewers were extremely awkward and not people I would want to work with. Nobody seemed happy or excited about their work when I asked about that. Yes, the company as a whole has great products and interesting technical problems but it also has more than 100k employees. Everyone gets a tiny piece of that pie. It feels very impersonal. Comp is lower than at many other companies. I hear promotions are stressful and hard. It's still a good company overall but there are plenty of other good companies so I dont understand the obsession.
Haha you answered this yourself. Everyone wants a tiny piece of that pie :)
Haha great observation
Lol google is a heaven for chilled out 20 year olds and 30 year olds looking to raise a family. However, if you want to get past the L5 hurdle It’s really tough these days In terms of pay...amazon gave me a better offer than google so...maybe all you need is a competing offer lolz Google also does pay decently well and the culture is a lot less toxic than fb’s (worked at both).
Also, I never had a real deadline at google, always went to the gym at 4:15Pm on the dot, was able to expense Bose headphones, lunchtime could be kept at 12:30 PM...worked...6-7 hrs a day. It’s chill. Too Effin chill.
That's some sweet WLB there. What level were you and why'd you end up going to Amazon ( if you're still there?) I've been toying with joining G but for the career I want, the next logical moves for me are TL and maybe EM elsewhere
WLB + good pay + FAANG brand. Rare combination.
High pay, low low work challenges and good job security (unlike Cisco and amazon).I know ppl who worked very hard at startups and amazon and they’re like ‘ah I bought a house want to take a step back and stay home with baby’ and google offers just that without compromising pay. Not everyone has wlb at google but folks I know who has worked there 4+ years are cruisssssing by
Hard to get fired like Cisco and....Amazon? Ah I get it, your whole comment is a joke.
”good job security (unlike Cisco and amazon)” You should re-read that line and spend a few more seconds thinking about what it means.
I had the same interview experience. No one seemed to be passionate about their work. My lunch buddy disclosed that he had interviewed with another company the day before. Definitely a turn-off.
Lol lots of people on my team are constantly interviewing to be “on their feet” in case that day comes they rly don’t like their jobs anymore. It speaks for the WLB atleast to be able to do that
To rest and vest bro 🤙
There are many reasons why people are obsessed with Google 1. Google engineers are generally considered smartest. Google somehow has a reputation of hiring only the best. 2. The pay is better than most companies 3. The work life balance is very good for most people. 4. There are enough opportunities. If you want to cruise, you can do that. If you want to launch an important project, that is available. You want to work on a moonshot, go for it. I worked for Microsoft, Amazon, 2 startups and now Google. I am most happy at G.
Trolling? I worked for Facebook before, but I like Google better. Well it’s just me, nothing to be generalized.
They pay well
