Hardware to software switch

Hardware has saturated and not been exciting for me. I am planning to go back to school for either PhD in computer vision or related roles to get roles AI related at Facebook which have hardware and software exposure.

Can anybody in these roles throw some opinions on how the work is going to be ?

I was in HW eng and self studied for over a year and now work in SW. just put your head down, study, practice and you’ll be fine

How long were you in HW before you made the swap? Did you have to start over as an entry level SWE?

Yeah I like the question @hkyoma asked. Same qn here. Where weave you worked before SWE. Did you have any sort of coding experience, was it all worth it for you?

  • I switched from hardware to software and my experience - First , you are basically losing your hardware experience , it’s years down the drain. Second , you will make more money in software coz of demand but atleast some people you work with are going to be honestly weird in some way . I am not sure why but software attracts assholes. I did not experience this in hardware . I think it’s because I ended up working in better hardware than software companies . Third , you would have to work extra hard to catch up, but if you do , you will catch up and then it will be worth it . For fields , pick a hot field - AI/ML/ data science coz they have some relevance to work you have done , or self driving cars etc

Will a nanodegree or a course (from one of the universities) help? Are SW interviews all about leetcode?

    • Sw interviews are about leetcode , system design and ability to talk about similar past work . I’m not sure about nanodegrees, sorry

I am looking to switch from HW to SW as well, I am hardware PM and not able to get any interview calls for software PM.

Any tips on how to make the switch without getting additional education?

I’m on the same path. I haven’t had a hard time getting calls, phone screens, and have even had a few interviews. My issue seems to be more of a culture fit. I’m not super excited to high five everyone as I walk i to work and talk about how much I love everything and everyone and then put selfies on Instagram. May just be an age thing.

I have an ms in solid state physics and no formal cs training.

Yep, right there with you. 3 YoE in ASIC world, looking to transition to SWE before it's too late. Doing leetcode easy's for now, will hopefully keep improving with time.
