How has the experience been for software engineers who moved to Canada after not getting through H1B lottery?

Have you seen a big drop in your savings / month? (Not absolute TC as it would obviously be lower, but savings may stay similar if you live modestly) Have you been able to get exciting or less boring work to do? Are you happier with the freedom that comes with the PR? Any other pros/cons? Tagging Shopify here cuz Blind tags suck!

A friend moved to Vancouver in Jan of last year. Initially she loved the freedom of having a PR but the high cost of living and the massive pay cut just made it not worth it in the end. She ended up moving back to Bangalore in Oct. Hoping to return to the US on L1 and try her luck again. This system shattered her dreams and aspirations. Someone who was once a gold medalist with a masters in CS from an Ivy league school is now taking her skills elsewhere.

Why return on L1? Planning to jump the same hoops again?

Microsoft Dr. Root Mar 10, 2019

Yep. L1 doesn't have a cap (like h1) and buys you more time. You get several tries at h1b.

Why do tech companies pay low in Canada? Exploitation?

Qualcomm NotInQ Mar 10, 2019

I think the country in general is more socialistic. High taxes resulting in low pay compared to US. See the talk from Obama where he explains how having more regulations increases the cost of a product. But I am glad US has a balance at least.

Not enough competition, google fb amazon offices are all rather small so smaller companies don’t have to compete

couple of my friends have moved to canada last year. they like it there. work is not that interesting and pay is also not that interesting but quality of life is pretty good. he says he is not able to save much but he has been living comfortably.

I am so confused if my backup plan should be Canada or back home to India :/

VMware genius1 Mar 10, 2019

only you can answer that question

SAP jkitsxh Mar 10, 2019

Try Canada. If not anything, you will get the citizenship in 3 yrs. You can always move back to India after.

Infoblox 2600 Mar 10, 2019

You can likely get a higher TC in India. Also not much interesting work in Canada; mostly non crucial projects for American companies.

Microsoft UMbR31 Mar 10, 2019

Amen to that. I'd pick 30% salary in Bangalore over 45% salary in Toronto any day.

Nokia bDAU36 Mar 11, 2019

This could true in some cases but not always. Montreal is known for AI hub in world. I had seen very good project in Canadian companies with global team member presence. Most of project that goes to India is mostly for support and maintenance. There are exceptions to that. But when project goes to India means whole idea is cost cutting from company's point of view and no fuck given for quality.

@OP while you are boasting about your friend's achievements. Could you also tell where she had done her Undergrad.

VMware genius1 Mar 10, 2019

i don’t know who gives out gold medals in ivy league and who thinks it makes sense to pay off ivy league loan from bangalore instead of canada

Most students from India. Even from tier 3 colleges in India, who go to masters have a 4.0
