My experience with recruiters, even when getting an offer, is almost exclusively bad. They are either rude or unreliable. This is really puzzling to me. Should they not attract talent to the company? Why is recruiter a job? Can it not be automated into oblivion?
I get contacted by recruiters all the time. Only 1 company has been good. The others just want to put butts in seats and try and shoehorn you into positions that don’t fit.

Recruiters are almost universally overworked so candidate experience often takes a hit.
Yeah, but if this is the reason, why aren't companies hiring a couple more? After all, they are a candidate's first contact to the company, so you would assume a good impression should be made. It is a puzzle.
Because HR is not a profit center and is therefore low on the list to receive headcount and/or money for constractors. and it is too hard to quantify the impact/make a business case for the cost of a good/bad candidate experience
Considering only top tier companies, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon have all been "OK" from a recruiting standpoint. Google a few years ago the recruiter sucked compared to the recruiter I'm working with now (who has been fantastic). She also told me that Google has overhauled their recruiting recently, so that might explain it.
if its a 3rd party recruiter, if they open their mouth they are lying. They lie constantly. I have one lie to me get me to take a temp to perm when i turned down the temp job because i got a longer temp job. They lied. It was not a temp to perm. This was during the 2002 recession too. They lie all the time.
Yahoo and Samsung ghosted me back in 2012. Not sure how their standards are now.
Try to get past them. Recruiters are not technical. They may talk like they are but if they were they would have been doing engineering not recruiting. People skills, self confidence and mild bullshitting wins.
I have been ghosted by FB couple of times, had REALLY GOOD experiences with Google and MSFT recruiters, AMZN & AAPL - Not yet interacted.
