How many time can I re-apply for an SWE role/level before being permanently banned ?

I've been rejected sometimes after first round, sometimes after onsite for a couple of firms including top tech ones : G, FB, MS for L3/L4 roles and hedge funds like Citadel, Optiver, JSC, 2S. I've received and rejected offers from other firms as well but above ones are ones where I would like to go in future. I've been told by colleagues that in general if I twice fail interviews (for any level) at a company, they usually won't call me back ever and I will be banned permanently as it demonstrates I'm just wasting their time and my skills are still lacking even after 2 attempts. Is that correct ? Does same analogy apply for rejecting offers from companies as well ? So if I apply 6 months-1 year later from now and still screw it up am I done forever and cannot apply firms mentioned above ? If so, that is really stressful when giving interviews at preferred companies. YOE 3 TC 180k

When I interview at FAANGs most who interviewed me had to try 3+ times before getting hired. One guy said it took him 5 tries. So a lot.

Yes

For Google, you are banned if you fail 3 on-sites.

I have seen mixed answers about this one. Including folks from Google. I wish there was an official answer to this.

What other answers have you heard? I'm pretty certain about this one...

So failing at phone screen vs at on-site is different in terms of retries permitted by company ? Which one has a longer cool-off period ?

Google phYh45 Nov 21, 2019

I actually haven't heard of any other company having limits. Hope to hear from someone on this thread if there are limits elsewhere. Phone screen should logically have the maximum cool down period since that means it wasn't even close.

Is that so ? I always thought phone screen required least amount of engineer's time + usually a single engineer's opinion so cool off should be lower than multiple engineers rejecting you at onsite.

I'd be very surprised if there was a limit. Sure, if you don't pass consecutively 2-3 times in a row recruiters might take notice and not reach out for a year. But I seriously doubt any company would permanently ban you. Just make sure not to get in to a verbal spat with anyone, lol. Or if you do, make sure they don't know your name, hahaha.
