Normally how many percent?
~50% total loss (TC loss + higher taxes + currency conversion) for me
More than you would expect. Canada is expensive. Less TC more expense. Lol
Some concrete data from my own transfer. Base dropped 18%, TC didn’t drop because I got more RSUs assigned for the next 2 years (2020, 2021). However I understand that now I’m almost at the top of my band in Canada and won’t get another substantial increase until the next promo (which would be L7). Overall, taxes are going to go from about 35% (combined for family) in WA to about 44% in BC (approx, we’ll know exact numbers next year). Given the positives and the immigration dilemma, we decided to go for it.
- When you say your base dropped by 18% does that include the currency exchange also? For instance if your base was 100k USD, when you transfer to Canada did that become equivalent to 82k USD or no it became 82k CAD? (With an assumed 30% conversion rate) - About your RSU, did they lower your RSU because you going to Canada or no they don't do conversions to CAD just cuz you going to Canada? For instance if your RSU while you were employed in US was 30 k per year USD, did they make the RSU as much as 30k CAD when you moved to Canada or it stayed the same and they gave you equivalent of 30K USD in CAD which would mean roughly around 39K CAD?
Yes the drop already accounts for currency conversion. Went from 160k USD to 174k CAD base.
I'm planning on making this move relatively soon. I'll take the loss in TC for a better life for my kids. BC has some of the best public schools in the world (look up the BC new curriculum -- makes me wish I was a kid lol). Not to mention safety: me and my husband's cars have both been prowled more than 5 times each this past year living in a $1M house in Ballard and don't even get me started on school shootings. American society as a whole is toxic and sick. Very ready to leave,
I think Seattle is still a very nice place to live. We love our neighborhood and people here. But what you say about quality of life, specifically in regards to the political direction and attitude towards immigrants - I’m with you on that. And that (and the uncertainty around forever waiting on H1Bb for a EB2 priority date) is why we are leaving too.
Is TC in Vancouver, BC comparable to Toronto, ON?
Vancouver is usually significantly less.
Or normally for big companies?
