10+ years at msft as dev. Solid reviews with 160-140% total rewards over last few years. Have had a good work life balance and generally never worried much about total comp until I started browsing through numbers here. I am bringing in around 300k an year Seattle area as a senior IC. my domain was lower level software (C++) until recently when I finally moved over to services. Have had offers to lead a team in the past but chose to remain ic. The 75k SSA this year sounded cool till I heard aapl does 200k rsus every year? Is this typical? I am hearing numbers of 400k+ in Seattle area from aapl and amzn from folks with 5-6 years exp, couple of them I know personally. How typical are these offers and how much am I leaving on the table.
You should interview every 6 months to keep up with the market, even if you are not looking for a change. There is a huge demand for cloud engineers in Seattle, and a strong one with 5-6 year exp can definitely get 400k+ TC. That being said, unless you get an offer in hand, no one can tell how much you are leaving on the table.
AAPL you can make $400k+ if you work here for 4+ years. Very tough to make it as a fresh hire.
Comparison is the death of happiness. Really think to yourself would an extra 40k really make you happier if you had to work more? There will always be people who earn more that you, don’t let that affect your happiness.
300k as senior IC is low though while at the same company for 10+ years. 7 yoe is roughly 240-280k as an offer at G/FB/Uber and only goes up from there. 10+ years you're looking at mid 300s. You comfortably get an offer at least matching your current salary
@op how are you making 300k a year as senior? What’s the approx breakdown of your comp? I think you are looking at the hrweb bs page that always shows the number inflated. As per your question I think you should ask yourself that you are not trying bcoz you don’t want to get out of your comfort zone or is there something really important that’s holding you back from looking- often it’s the former.
@homer good points. I am asking myself those questions now. About comp - you are right, I am going by the modeler. They have given me a couple of SSA over years, but not worth talking about given the numbers from other companies. 180k, 36-38k bonus (average),40k stock regular + average 20k SSA. You add the 10k from 401k match - but at this point I am trying to find a way to justify the modeler on hrweb, than objectively analyze the package. Leetcode, here I come...
Yup I know, I had the same questions for last few years and finally pulled the trigger 2 months back. So after a 9+ yr of procrastination I ended up a job outside MS with 3 months of effort and 78 leetcode questions. I ended up more than doubling my comp. I definitely feel that I should have taken the decision long time back.
Microsoft is where you go to retire. Make double your TC elsewhere until then
Are you losing sleep because of $$$? It's 4:30 am here, and you're worrying about money instead of dreaming in your bed. Anyway, Amazon folks quote $350k+ salaries only because of insane stock appreciation. Their current offer for your experience would be around $320k to $350k L6 or $380k+ for L7. Apple salaries are low initially, however, they make up for it with their insane refreshers. To be honest you’re not leaving a lot of money on the table. You could make around $80-$100k more by sacrificing WLB. If you feel it’s worth then get your leetcode subscription tomorrow.
