I have been in the lead role for past 3 years and looking for a promotion( no cahnge in role), but due to severe competition (with others who are in the sam job grade longer than me), I may not get it. But the role I am handling is far challenging, invloved and have higher visibility in the department than roles others are handling.with the same job grade. How do I convey this to my manager to convince to get promotion. should I tell him I will look for other career options if I dont get promotion?
To clarify, the responsibility I have been handling have increased in last three years. I am in the same designation for three years(which is a must before I can be promoted)
I am happy to be wrong, bit if they haven't asked you so far, then either they don't have an immediate need for a manager in your sub-team or they don't fully those qualities in you. Probably won't hurt to try seeking such opportunities elsewhere in the market.
3 years in and you haven't even asked, even though it is on your mind? Talk to your manager first and get the reaction first. Then we can give more feedback. At this point, you don't even know the manager's stance on this yet. Or you can wait a few more years first as you start to build resentment for the manager and see others get promoted.
TC or no advice !

If you are doing challenging work than others and getting high visibility tasks already, then you just need to differentiate it and show your manager and make sure he also realizes that. In appraisal review, instead of asking can i get promotion, ask for what is the pathway and expectations to be met for getting a promotion. Once you get that info see if you can convince yourself that you have done it. Then see how you can convince your manager that you deserve a promotion. ATB.
Written communication skills are important for senior people. I wouldn’t promote you either, especially if your code/docs look the same.
Someone had to say it. Agreed.
