In February 2019, during my second to last semester (BS in Comp Sci at a state university in Maryland), I got a Web Dev position at an LMS company (TC 50k). I graduated this summer and within the past couple weeks I requested a salary reevaluation (asked for 70k, was offered 65k and promised +10k increase a year from now). I am feeling a bit discouraged about my salary while reading through Blind.. what steps do I take to get into the big bucks? TC: 65k YOE: <1
But regardless the first 1 to 2 years right after college is not when you should worry about your salary but its after you gain the experience and expertise in an in demand skill
This is bad advice. You gain better experience at places with high TC because they attract better mentors. Just leetcode and get into FAANG or hot tech company
You get better experience at places with high TC's LOL your funny
You cant get high TC from shit companies. idiots on Blind think they deserve to be paid as equally as those in FANG while they are at shit tier companies. Your current TC reflects your current value at your current city, nothing to feel discouraged about.
Should I be looking into opportunities elsewhere and moving? San Fran? Seattle?
Yeah obviously, you obviously havent read the blind posts, only the numbers people easily lie about 🤦♂️
Hey. In DMV area I would aim more for 78k. 65 is a little low for web dev imo. But yeah I’m with you, everyone on blind seems to make 300k..
It's a small company. When I started there were only 12 people. Now it has been bought out and that company has 90 employees. Should I be looking more toward government things in DMV?
If you are interested. Cloud is a enormous opportunity here, a lot of big gov contractors are just starting to get into it. You’ll see a lot of positions open by the summer. I’m usually against certs but the AWS ones hold value here. Personally wouldn’t recommend gov though, I’m trying to leave after school.
Step 1: Leetcode Step 2: ??? Step 3: TC
If your goal is to maximize TC learn to crack tech interviews at top tech companies (FAANG Uber Airbnb Snap Microsoft Lyft Twitter LinkedIn Etc). Competing offers will get you more money when you switch jobs. Chase promotions or new jobs for the first few years of your career. Spend some time exploring levels.fyi to figure out which companies and locations pay well. SFBA is the highest concentration of top companies but there are LOTS of other locations in the US with high paying opportunities.
If you want the big bucks, move to the bay area, NYC, or Austin and get lucky. The salaries listed on Blind are extremely weighted for FAANG and other startups that are high salary and not so high in benefits. For your exp and area, I'd say you are in a good position. Keep focusing on your experience to grow and start looking when you feel you are plateauing at your current position
You’ve missed the FAANG train for new college hires.
Make it rain
Your just starting out. You don't have much experience. For now you should take up the offer but I think even as a new grad in Maryland you should get around 80k to 85k
How long should I stay with this company before looking for something else? If that's what a new grad should be making should I be looking for something else?
I mean accept the offer and continue interviewing and see if you can find something better. There's no reason for you to not accept, and look for something else.
