I am a bar raiser, AMA Edit: I thought people would ask questions around how I evaluate the LPs, but people seem more interested in the role itself or just insulting. you gotta give what people want.
Hey bud, sorry to rain on your parade here, but you ainโt special.
If I am in the loop I have the veto power, you donโt. Except that, I am pretty normal.
False. I have seen BR decline and HM hire. Only matter of time before this absurd position/process is stopped because clearly BRs are getting God syndrome.
When you enter the room as a bar raiser and ask the questions, do you look for reasons to reject the candidate or do you look for reasons to take him in?
Both
What kinds of bars?
Hiring bar
How much you bench?

What makes a man turn into a bar raiser? Lust for TC? YoE? Or were you just born with a heart full of LC hards?
Desire to raise the bar
Eww
Do you ever beat the shit out of people who you think lower the bar
Why would I be a bar raiser otherwise?
God I wish that were me
Is there training? What are you focused on? Culture?
Yeah there's training. And obviously there is cultural fit in an interview but also technical chops
Right - I was really asking what is more important to you. Sounds like it's equal.
So, how much time do you invest in preparing the question and thinking through all the ways that interview might pan out? I believe people invest a lot of time preparing and getting ready for an Amazon interview. As a bar raiser, you have the power to make or mar a candidateโs dream job based on signals in a single round
In interviews I speak in cryptic limericks using an extremely loud voice. If the candidate is sweating or freaking out a bit, I've already weeded out the weak ones
I donโt spend much time now, may be 3-4 minutes per interview. I donโt have the power to pass/fail, I just make sure that our bar is consistent across teams and candidates. So works both ways.
Do you raise their bar without any touch or some touch is involved ?
New teams require my constant touch, most need only occasional.
