If you must accept a Tier 2, what factors do you consider?

If you MUST accept a Tier 2 placeholder job, and you will be on the market again in 6mth, what do you look for? Final goal to get to FAANG.

- Relative prestige? Will Tier 2 be any better than Tier 3 or some no name startup?

- Location? Would you move to a FAANG city for better networking and referral opportunities? Yes people say LC all day, but good intel will also help to focus on what to prep.

- TC? Does $150k vs $130k (adjusted for COL) really matter since it's so low relative to FAANG?

- Type of Work? Do you target a role that does more marketable work/skills for FAANG?

- WLB? Do you go for a slacker, better WLB job so you can leetcode and prep more?

If you have to go there, you're unlikely to break into tier 1. Settle in for good WLB and decent team culture where you can learn something new. But focus on what you have, not the pie in the sky.

Sorry, if you’re talking about tier 4, you can’t really hope to hop into top tier on its own.

Just accept that you’re a teir 2 person and stay there. No guarantee you’ll get teir 1 next time either so choose somewhere you’d be fine staying longer term. Maybe in a year economy will go bad and have no shot at teir 1 anyway

I think WLB matters most here if the goal is “tier 1” because you’ll have more time leetcoding and preparing whatever needed for passing the interview.
