I’m 23 years old and finishing up my last semester of undergrad (dual degree in Biology & Exercise Science). I started teaching myself to code 9 months ago and figured out I’m fairly decent at quickly learning programming skills and I really enjoy it, so I recently applied for a job that was looking for a “work experienced Java developer with minimum bachelors in CS.” I have none of thise qualifications and applied just for interview practice. Up against a handful of very experienced developers, I was unexpectedly hired. I don’t know Java, I have no formal experience developing anything (exceot for web development on my own), and I’ve never even heard of any of the software I’ll be using... My employer knows all of this- I was very honest about stating my reasons for applying and my utter lack of knowledge, but they still started me with a very healthy salary and amazing benefits (better than most adults that I’ve talked to- it’s a pretty big opportunity). I start full time in 2 months and don’t really know what to expect. I’m extremely excited and want to do anything I can to impress my employer and be the best I can be, however, I don’t want to waste their time or cause any problems because of my ignorance. I know that over time I’ll do well and I have no doubt that I‘ll make them happy to have me EVENTUALLY, but I’m nervous about jeapordizing any potential success I may have because I may struggle to get started. Any advice or even similar stories would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everybody
This profession is all about learning no matter the experience level. With technology constantly changing its almost better to come in with a clean slate.
Half life of knowledge in software development is 18 months. (Maybe even less) no one knows anything.. don't worry about imposter syndrome. You will learn on the job
I'd hire you. Don't second-guess yourself. Sure, you must ask for a mentor-buddy who is patient. Don't worry about the job description. Most people can't write a good one anyway. Good luck!

Agree you will learn on the job but try to study the foundations so that your life is less hard later. Looks like you still have some time
Learn on the job, I'm still doing it at 15+ yoe.
just build a web app with Java Spring etc
Your employer will be expecting you to take a while to ramp up. Just make sure you ask questions early on don't waste time by being stuck.
Like your attitude, I would have hired you too if you can pass Google interviews. :)
Sign me up 🤷🏼♂️ Google is the dream
“I’m extremely excited and want to do anything I can to impress my employer and be the best I can be” That’s why you were hired. Some employers will foster it and help you grow and others will take advantage of it. Not sure which one you got but good luck.
Hopefully the former, there isn’t a single review under 5 stars of GlassDoor 🤷🏼♂️.. Thank you for the reply
