Indeed as a company

Not here to promote indeed, we have our problems but want to let the public know more about this company.

Pay: Pretty decent but just not FNG decent.
Two Data points I have for SWE at 2YOE
150k Austin
260k SF

Food(Austin not sure about other office):
1. Buffet style breakfast and lunch. It is really really good.
2. Barista, coffee smoothies whole day
3. Good pastry whole day
4. Deli, sandwiches throughout the day
5. Snacks, fruits, ice cream, drinks always stacked full

WLB:
1. Real Unlimited PTO, at least AFAIK
2. Office is almost empty at 5
3. Not a lot of pressure if you get things done
4. A lot more product than just job search

Bad part:
1. Promotions seems hard
2. Company is going through reorg hence the previous hiring freeze which is being lifted
3. Company is promoting brand more now, so people use to think Indeed as a no name company
4. Not big in Seattle or Bay Area

Note: I am in the engineering department

Indeed is NOT a top tier engg company. It's on par with Starbucks engg at best. Have you seen the UI? Looks like a 4th grader learnt HTML and was hired to create the homepage.

This is usually the response I get from my tech friends. Indeed UI is out of date, no denying this but we do that on purpose because our job searches aren’t just the wealthy or tech savvy ones. Most of them are blue collar people finding jobs and a lot of places outside of US who don’t have like 16g of ram to power their browsers. This is how we make profit.

But yeah...we should update our UI better but keep in mind we have way more product then the job search portal.

We actually have a new UI designed and is behind the curtains AFAIK. It’s just the higher management is hesitant on changing and I don’t blame them. Changing UI especially for blue collar job applicants can be hard for them to adapt.

Are you kidding me? The ui is amazing. I love the simplicity of it and clutter free front page. It just works. What else do you need? Ruin in with nasty js frameworks and kill the pageload time ? To solve what?

So why would I work at Indeed instead of any Tier 1 or Tier 2 tech company?

      OP
Then not sure why Indeed would be consider tier 2 if the only metric is TC. Pretty sure we pay at the same level with MS, Amazon, Uber and sometimes FB, Google.

Having worked at 2/5 FAANG companies + Microsoft, if you're looking for a company to construct your sense of self-worth, you should stick to a "tier 1" or "tier 2" company (whatever that really means).

My experience at Indeed has been FAANG comp + low stress + a culture of hiring and keeping people (vs. treating employees as disposable since you have a line of thousands of people hungry to take your job for the workplace experience/cult fantasy narrative these companies have created.)

I've been generally satisfied working there.

Thank you. We pay good if we want you. They outbid my Uber, Apple, start up offer but you have to perform really good in the interview.

The interview process is too kind of messed up.

One thing where indeed looses out is on stock. I know that they have an internal stock granting scheme, but it still doesn’t count. People at other fang tend to rest and vest - so in my opinion, no indeed unless they go ipo
      Sep 1
    • Indeed kelxk
      OP
Indeee will never go IPO because we are already acquired by a rich Japanese company. Yeah, the not having RSU part kinda of hurts for Indeed.

What's TC for senior sde in Austin? They posted some base numbers on their website and it was not too impressive, like 130-170
    Sep 2 3
    • Indeed kelxk
      OP
That is just base. You should get sign on for one year and two annual anniversary bonus at I am guessing 30k~60k. At the beginning of the fourth year, LTIPs kicks in which depends on the company’s growth. Also, we have annual bonus from 10%~20%. So all of this together you should at least get a TC of 200k.
      Sep 2
    • Amazon OTdS88
Ah that's pretty decent in Austin

    • Indeed kelxk

Yeah but I heard amazon pays Seattle TC in Austin. So Amazon way better than Indeed at Austin.

3 years is a long time... what's comp ignoring ltip?
      Sep 3
    • Indeed kelxk
      OP
Usually new industry hires gets sign on and annual bonus to bridge the gap before LTIP vests. So the data point I gave is before LTIPs vest because LTIPs maybe zero like RSU might be trash. The TC will be a lot higher if I divide the LTIPs by four and average it into the TC.

Also, I saw some other message which said they give sign on for one year and two anniversary bonus. Also, you have annual bonus from 10-20%. So, does that mean you have anniversary bonus and on top of that you have additional annual bonus?

I know friends at Indeed and I’ve heard great stuff about the company.

If you’re in Microsoft, Amazon or similar companies, you should definitely give Indeed a try - even more so if you’re not in one of the better orgs like Azure or AWS. For family oriented engineers that don’t have a lot of personal time, Indeed can be a great option.
