Got invited to an Indian wedding this Jan! It will be in a small city outside Delhi. A few questions for the Indians here: 1) What should I (a white American) bring as a gift? I'm guessing they have the same things in India... 2) what should I wear? Blazer and pants? My friend offered to take me sherwani shopping - would that be better? 3) Any other tips for attending?
Please wear a smoke filtering mask as you will be near Delhi
For the wedding ceremony, Indian attire - sherwani or a Nehru jacket on kurta would be preferable. If there is a separate reception, blazer is the way to go. ^above is basis observations from attending Delhi weddings
For #1, gift them $$ in an envelope. $100 will be great if they r hosting u (accommodation)...if not then INR 3k-5k OR nothing 2. Sherwani will be a memorable experience for all...carry blazer as a backup 3. Enjoy the attention
A gift card worth $100 would also work.
If you have been invited and are close buddy. I would say do 2.) And let him take you for shopping. In terms of gift, i would say you are already going probably paying for flight. You have already done a big thing. Just a small gift when you folks come back to USA, would be fine . What exact gift ? Whatever you give to your other American friends. Don't stress too much.
People will remember you
This looks very traditional - canโt go wrong with this.
1) a few thousand rupees would be fine, or anything else. 2) you'll stand out, whatever you wear. I don't think you should sweat it 3) be ready to enjoy awesome food
Thanks everyone!! I'll go with a Sherwani and a few K INR in an envelope. I'm so exciteddd about this ๐๐๐ฐ
Honest advice - Please dont wear a sherwani at all. At indian weddings only the groom wears the sherwani. Blazers or formal coats will be more appropriate.
You should wear a kurta of a vibrant colour and modi jacket..just google the images...sherwani is waste of money and it would be too loud. Your presence would be more than a gift to them..I bet.
Modi jacket?? What is it? I have heard of nehru jacket only.
